Feds Warn Of Terror Plot Against NYC Subways
CBS News Interactive: America On Guard
NEW YORK (AP) ― Federal authorities are warning law enforcement personnel of a possible terror plot against the New York City subway system during the holiday season.

An internal memo obtained by The Associated Press says the FBI has received a "plausible but unsubstantiated" report that al Qaeda terrorists in late September may have discussed attacking the subway system.

The report indicates that al Qaeda terrorists "in late September may have discussed targeting transit systems in and around New York City. These discussions reportedly involved the use of suicide bombers or explosives placed on subway/passenger rail systems," according to the document.

"We have no specific details to confirm that this plot has developed beyond aspirational planning, but we are issuing this warning out of concern that such an attack could possibly be conducted during the forthcoming holiday season," states the warning, which is dated Tuesday.

While federal agencies regularly issue all sorts of advisory warnings, the language of this one is particularly blunt.

Intelligence and homeland security officials are working with local authorities to try to corroborate the information "and will continue to investigate every possible lead," the memo says.

I hope this is just another false alarm. scared

I hate though that now we even have to consider it a real threat.

Yikes. Now that I'm a frequent public transit user, these reports are really scary. The DC area is now instituting random checks of passengers as they come into the subway station. Um, why did it take 7 years to institute that?!

Sy they have that in the NYC subways. Some people, normally tourists, get really upset about it. When I had my wedding my friends who were not from here went through all the regular emotions, how it is all Bush's fault, and is taking away our privacy. I simply explain to them that NYC is a hot zone for Terrorist attacks, or perhaps they have forgotten. And maybe they are bothered by it, but the people who have to use these subways everyday are not. And it is our choice to take the subways, therefor we are giving up our right to privacy. It is not as thought they randomly search me in the street. I get searched all the time when I ride the subway, and I appreciate the vigilance.

    Absolute power, corrupts absolutely.

I am really shocked that it hasn't happened yet in DC (searches). And you know what, do those people complain when they get searched at the airport?

    That's beyond me.

Yep, America has no attention span. They've already forgotten about Sept 11 and why we need some precaution.

GB, you are forgetting that 9/11 was Bush's fault and that we deserved it.

Another example why we needed a STRONG leader to protect our country -- not a wussy who is wishy washy about our national defense.

As if we New Yorkers didn't know this already. We are always on alert here for this. K-9 units, bag searches, cops riding in the cars all the time. The "if you see something, say something" campaign. Why can't they go to the LA subway system and take that out. They have tried this already and our cops got them. G-d Bless the NYPD! I just wish they would pick a different city already. Detroit would be a nice change.

Sam, Los Angeles doesn't use mass transit enough for a hit there to matter.
Plus, it's mostly students and low-income people.
Now, the freeways are another matter! Especially key interchanges. That, combined with the overflow to detours, would strangle us. It's actually a pretty delicate balance, much of the time.

Shoot, we had rain overnight and this morning a radio traffic report said that most of the southbound lanes of a key nearby freeway--at a major interchange--were closed due to flooding. Initially four lanes were down to one, I believe.

    Our infrastructure is pathetic.

Fine then let them take out the LA Freeways. It will be environmental of them to clean up the air out there. You can all have a few days off.
I am just tired of always being the target. When we go on alert, I get surrounded by cops and military; which can be fun under the right circumstances, just a real holiday joy killer.

They probably figure L.A. is already so dysfunctional, they don't have to waste the bombs....
NYC is also more critical to the global financial and stock markets.

Wearing the crown can be tiring. There is NYC and then there is everywhere else. Still it would be nice if Hollywood felt it up close and personal and then made a movie with a real point of view instead of the crap they have been putting out the last few years. Oh well, they would probably blame themselves and make it from the poor down trodden and oppressed terrorists point of view.
