A trio of cakes made for two 1 year old twins boys birthday. All three were yellow cake with vanilla buttercream icing and decorations. The large cake was a sheet cake shaped into a party hat with the colors matching the party invitation. The two smaller "smash" cakes were adorned with the boys names and smaller party hats in colors that coordinated with the party invitation and the larger cake.

I have a very useful trick to achieve that! I think I found this tip on a cake decorating forum a few years ago and has worked wonders for me ever since. Go to Home Depot or any hardware store that sells paint rollers, specifically 3-4 inch foam rollers like this.
Ice your cake in buttercream (reasonably smooth, doesn't have to be perfect by any means) and let it sit outfor a few minutes for the icing to crust. Take our foam roller and using light to medium pressure, you can "iron" out all of the lines on your buttercream and make it almost as smooth as fondant! It's amazing and so much better than using the "Viva paper towel" method that they teach you in Wilton classes!
