GOP Proposes Sales Tax Holiday
Tuesday, October 14, 2008 - Associated Press

New Jersey Republicans are proposing a five-week sales tax holiday to stimulate the state economy.

The proposal would cut the sales tax in half -- to 3.5 percent -- during the busiest retail season, Thanksgiving through Jan. 4. The sales tax in Urban Enterprise Zones would also be cut in half, to 1.75 percent.

Two Republican officials familiar with the plan say it would jump-start the economy by allowing customers to pay less for merchandise and increasing retail sales.

The officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because legislation to enact the plan was still being prepared for introduction in the Assembly on Thursday, say most of the estimated $500 million in lost tax revenue would be offset by the increased business activity.

The proposal will be formally unveiled Tuesday, two days before Gov. Jon Corzine outlines his own economic stimulus package.

I like it - It is amazing when you look at your receipts and see how much tax increases prices!!! Here in Canada it is about 15% on your purchases!!!

Wow 15% in Canada? I hope it goes toward something like healthcare.

If this law passes, the sales tax will go from 7% to 3.5% in all areas, except "Urban Enterprise Zones", which will go from 3.5% to 1.75%. If I'm in the market for a car, I'll go to an UEZ then. For every $100 spent, the tax will go from $7 to $1.75. So, if I were to buy a $20,000 car, the tax will go from $1400 (at 7%) to $350 (at 1.75%), assuming it gets approved.

Yes, we do have a lot of social programs, and I am used to and good with that. I don't mind helping where I can. I am glad for the health care for everyone, and cannot imagine it any other way!
