We've worked for about 5 months on our loft remodel. We started with a big empty cement box, and we are in the process of transforming it into exactly what we want. We started with a blank canvas, and designed it all ourselves. I love our new place, and I am glad to share it with you all!Kitchen Before: As you can see, it was a drab kitchen with a basic electric stove, painted white and with cold galvanized steel shelves.Here is another one of the kitchen 'before' pictures. The partition is really cool - we are still trying to figure out where else to put it.These are great shelves. We are still working out the design for the stainless counter area next to the sink.This is a lengthwise picture of our Gaggenau convection oven and Dacor convection microwave. Not a single kernel left unpoppedThis is a picture of our Dacor fridge and appliance garage. It serves as a pantry too!Our Bulthaup open shelving is industrial, yet brings warmth to the space.This is another picture of the anodized aluminum and glass backsplash we designed and installed ourselves.Opposite the Dacor fridge is the sink. We placed a round glass table in the middle to bring the room together. We added stainless countertops, painted the walls a warm greige color and added in beautiful swiss pear cabinetry from Bulthaup.The Bathroom before is pretty basic - we call it a 'gas station' bathroomAfter:The bath door is open, and light is off.After:From outside, there is privacy, yet still an open airy feeling with the translucent door panelAfter:Here is a picture inside the bathroom, with the door closed when the halogen IKEA lights are on.This is a picture of our Thassos White Marble vanity - it actually sparkles just like snow in the sun.We found this a-mazing Boffi Makro Cherry Red Glass bath tub. It is a full 6 feet long - and inset cubbies rock.We put in a partition between the toilet and the rest of the bathroom. It is airy and open with a modern feel.We first added Thassos Marble white floor to match the Thassos Double Vanity. Our fab red glass tub with inset marble cubbies. I can't resist adding another pic!

great apartment 'vacuum' for a decent price

i've been holding off on getting a new vacuum, thinking that if i just waited until next paycheck i might be able to afford a nice one (bissell!! sigh). but this weekend i realized that the state of our (already old and ratty) apartment carpet was beyond bad, and i couldn't wait any longer. still didn't have the cash in hand for anything spiffy, so i took a stroll around BB&B looking for some kind of good solution.

et voila! i found the vx3 cordless floor and carpet cleaner. it's not actually a vacuum at all -- there's no holding tank or bag or anything like that, just a base with a small compartment. but i have a lot of faith in shark ever since finding the steam mop on the side of the road, taking it home, and finally getting rid of those grease stains on the tile under the stove (hubby likes bacon!)... so i figured, why not. plus, the pictures on the front package of it vacuuming spilled dirt made me think it might be able to handle the ever-present litter problem (our cats are diggers, and i haven't found a solution for this yet aside from constant sweeping and vacuuming). brought it home, and immediately loved the swivel and cordless action. and it sucked up stuff that our old vacuum definitely never got -- litter, cat hair, people hair, dust, you name it.

so, all in all, i'm thinking this is a great buy for small apartments with both flooring and carpeting. granted, i've only had it for a day. i'm hoping that due to it's not-vacuum-nature, it won't lose suction over time. anyone else out there have one of these and know for sure?

Has anyone noticed how looking for flatshare is akin to going to a job interview? I can't decide which one's worse. I think I'd rather be quizzed about my credentials than judged by a line of three people about whether I would make a good housemate or not. But I've been looking to move out of East London to NW1 for three months now, seen seven different places, and had no luck. I'm stuck. It all starts very fine and well ...

1. I find a place that sounds all right and is affordable on moveflat.com, contact the person, and arrange a viewing. Print out my google map, highlight the route from the tube station to the house (because I'm overly organised like that), and run through the questions I've got in mind for the people living there.

2. I get there a tad early or on time ... then I have about 10 or 15 minutes to make a first impression.

3. I'm shown the room and the facilities - I make a mental note in my mind of what I love and what I don't think I could live with.

Then it goes a bit downhill from there ...

4. The awkward come-sit-in-the-lounge-and-have-a-chat part occurs ... "Where do you work?" "What do you do?" "What do you like to do in your spare time?" "Would you say you are a social person?" This part can go either one of two ways - you either obviously do NOT click with these people and you make your polite goodbyes and leave with the familiar "We'll call you" (not the other way around, just like a job interview) OR you click really well, laugh, joke, and get along but when you don't hear from them in a few days or you email and get a "Sorry, but we went with someone else in the end," you think "Where did I go wrong?" This is especially sad in the case of finding The Perfect Flat.

5. You also get the weirdos, like the Aussie couple who showed me their gorgeous flat and then abruptly announced that they were moving back to Australian next week and could you take on the lease and find two new people to fill the house. OR the militant and very hardcore Swede, who insisted on a carefully written out cleaning rota for each person in the house and counted who owed what to whom in terms of FABRIC SOFTENER down to the very last pence. Or the "open house" type of viewing where three to four people arrive at the same time and have to sit in a neat little row in the lounge whereby we then go around making the same awkward small talk - but with competition next to you. "This flat is MINE, b*tch!" they think whilst smiling sweetly at you.

6. Anyways with the rejections come awkward things that are supposed to make you feel better, like "Oh we ended up going with a friend of a friend's ...but you were REALLY high on our list!" Oh wow, I was shortlisted for a flat! I've achieved something! OR "We went with someone else, but ... the girls were really positive about you!" Wow, strangers liked me - of course, not enough to live with me, but they did.

It's now the beginning of October. I wanted to move out of my sh*tty Shadwell abode by September. Then again, things could be much worse ... but though my current living situation at the moment is bearable (the inside of my flat is really lovely and there's the best curry house on the corner), I am certain that moving to the leafy neighborhood of Maida Vale, Marylebone or Pimlico will result in better moods in the morning and not clutching at my rape alarm at night when I'm coming home from work.

I recently saw an advertisement on TV offering some new crazy super towel. What was being shown on the infomercial was actually quite amazing. I really did say "wow" which is funny because next the commercial said, "we say wow, every time we use ShamWow."

In the commercial, this guy used this puny looking towel to soak up a bunch of liquid from a bowl. He even used a Sham Wow to soak up a bunch of soda from a piece of carpet and then squeeze the soda into another bowl.

The ShamWow seemed like a lot of hype, but if it works half as promised, it might be worth it. So I ordered a pack.

When my ShamWow order came today, the first thing I wanted to do was reenact the commercial when the guy soaks up a bowl of water with one of the orange towels on TV.

The guys it right because I did say "wow".

I have bought a lot of stuff on TV before and a lot of it has been garbage, but I have to admit these towels are great, even after washing in the washing machine. Just don't put them in the dryer. Squeeze them out and hang to dry, they dry quick.

So if you go through a lot of paper towels like my family does, ShamWow is great. However they are overpriced and you might be able to find an alternative somewhere else, but I really haven't tried so I cannot recommend a cheaper alternative.

The normal price for $19.95 for 8 ShamWow towels at the official website, but I found a deal on a forum where you can get more towels for the same price. I with I knew this before I ordered.

We moved in last Tuesday. After a few minor problems we are all unpacked.

I got lucky when we found this house. The landlord doesn't mind me adding flower beds.

Scence this house had 3 bedrooms I took on as my own privite space to read and do my crafts.
The Reading half.
I love the green pillow we found at Home Goods. When I saw it, it reminded me of grass.

The idea for the roses on the side of the cubes came from the fact that we had a painting of a tulip,some fake tulips and dried roses from our wedding that i want to us some where in the house. I love flowers so i started decorating my "room" with flower.
The craft side.
I made the table cloth out of some fabric the was left in the laundry room. It has grape vines all over it.
Cork board
I know i need a cork board to keep track of cards and small things that i use often. A little while ago I downloaded patterns for a garden alphabet. Wanting to cover the cork board is some thing I thought of garden alphabet.

Go to garage sales and second hand stores. You can find some really amazing stuff while staying within a budget.

1.CLEAN UR ROOM
Make sure you have a plastic bag to fill, a recycling bin, laundry basket, and cleaning supplies near by.
Pick up all the miscellaneous items that are all over your room.
Place all of the items you just picked up on any flat surface. An example would be your bed.
Pick up the first thing on top of the pile and put it where it belongs.
Repeat Step 4 for each of the items in the pile. If there is no specific place for the item, then place it in
another pile.
Create a home for all the items without a home after all the other items are put away.
Dust all surfaces, Make your bed, Vacuum etc...
Things You'll Need:

Carpet cleaner
Hangers
Pencil
Paper
Duster
Laundry Basket
Garbage bag
Trash Can
Music

2. PICK A THEME. It can be retro, plaid, stripes, blue, 50s, China, fashion designer, hotel suite...whatever you
love!

3. HANG STUFF ON THE WALLS. Post pictures, posters, bulletin boards, frames, collages, artwork, photography, or
display your collections etc. on your walls, if you can.

4. CHANGE THE CURTAINS. Hang stylish curtains or drapes that match with or accent your walls, furniture and decor.

5. DECORATE YOUR BED. Get a bright doona. Get one that is striped or plain. Use colorful sheets, quilts, and pillows,
or ones that express your own style. Add some fluffy teddies.

6. DISPLAY YOUR SPECIAL THINGS.Put special figurines, candles, your favorite books, or anything else you think is
special or that you want to display in your room. Put these things somewhere where others can see them, and where
you can admire them.

7. GET SOMETHING TO SIT ON. Add chairs, beanbags, couches...whatever matches best with your theme.

8. ADD MUSIC! Got an MP3? Turn it up and crank up the tunes! Organize and have a collection of your favorite CD's
nearby to play whenever you have company.

9. HANG STUFF ON THE CEILING. Tie ribbons or posts to your bed. Whatever sounds right to you.

10. KEEP YOUR CLOTHES NEAT. Keep your clothes and shoes neat inside your closet so you know where to find what you need.

11. DECORATE YOUR DESK. Your desk can be a decoration in its own. If you can, paint it to match your theme.

12. BE CREATIVE WITH ODDS AND ENDS. Get the random stuff that you shove in your drawers and bring it out. Spice up
your room with random do-dads. Scarfs are great for framing. Be creative! But remember, don't clutter up the room
this way.

13. MAKE YOUR OWN! See something that you like in a magazine that is too expensive? Try and create it yourself. Make
picture frames, lampshades, bulletin boards, blankets, etc. This way it is you, and it matches your room.

14. SET UP A TABLE OR SHELF. Look at your room and decide if there is someplace that you can set up a little table.
On the table you can put some of your own private things. Maybe a book, pencil, picture of a friend, or a little
memento from the last fun moment you shared.

15. ADD A RUG. Put a rug on the floor to add personality and theme. Or you could even hang one on the wall.

16. Buy a nice lampshade and storage boxes.

17. ADD FLOWERS TO UR ROOM. by ur bed in a vase or in a basket with a ribbon... gives a romantic look.

18. BIN IT. Keep a bin in your room.

19. VACUUM. Make sure the carpet looks nice. Because otherwise it can spoil a room.

20. GENERALLY CLEAN THE ROOM. Wash your windows, dust the furniture, clean the walls, etc. Spray a nice scent in
your room.

21. KEEP YOR ROOM CLEAN and organized so that you won't have to look for things when you need them. This way you
will know right where things are because you have made a spot for everything you want to keep in your room.

My mother in law bought me a Lemon Lavender Yankee Candle and I've been burning it in my office all day. It is amazing! It is one of the best scented candles I have ever smelled. And I can't do floral scents at all usually, but the lavender is so understated in this one. It is truly delightful! Thought I would share and recommend!

Little Girl Feeding Pidgeons by MK

MK is my dad. As some of you know, he is an artist who paints, using various media, this one is a 60's contemporary style, done in oil paints.. This painting, he painted in the early 1960's, and I think it reflects where he was in his personal life, and that was, at the time, he and my mom were raising a growing family. I think this painting reflects his love and wonder of having young children.

I usually stay over at my parent's one night most weeks, either a Wednesday or Thursday. This week it was Thursday night. I took a picture of my dad's painting and he agreed that I could post it in team sugar.

So I am totally obsessed with china - as in dinnerware. Who would've thought?? It seems like a boring topic/hobby/obsession but I've become completely hooked since I inherited an incomplete set from my Grandmother. I have no idea how old it is, but we're guessing it dates back to the beginning of the 20th century (the 1900's, smarty). Anyways, I'd love to be able to complete the set (it's missing three pieces), so I've been doing a little research online. These pictures were unfortunately not taken in the spring when everything was in bloom, but will give you an idea of what our yard looks like. I still really need patio chairs too! When my husband and I moved in, the yard was completely dirt. We installed all irrigation, plant material, grass, and our pavers all on our own. My husband even built me a planter for my garden! The only item that we contracted out was our concrete. I hope to slowly put pictures up of completed (or somewhat completed is a better way to describe) rooms of our home! Thanks for looking:)yard 1

Our Dining Room

It's nothing major but we did redo the Dining room a little bit...oh and I switched out the chandelier all by myself!
I also did the floral arrangement on the table. And they're not in the picture but there are now burgundy tapers in the candle sconce to the right of the window.

I promised myself that I would blog faithfully every Monday ... and then had to go on a business trip. I hate business trips. The work continues to pile up back at the office and, when you get back, you have to work double-time to clear all the backlog. Needless to say, I'm only just caught up. LOL

Okay, so how did I go with my first quest? Well, I managed to source some flour! Yaay! From Finland! Now, I don't mean to insult anybody who comes from Finland, but may I just say that when I think of organic, unbleached bread flour, the land of the fjords does not automatically spring to mind. I know better now, though. The flour is a beautiful creamy colour, but I think I need to now hunt for some bread improver. The bread tastes delicious, but is a bit anemic-looking and collapsed coming out of the machine.

That, of course, is one of the problems with relocating. (No, I don't mean collapsed bread!) Just as you have your schedule worked out -- you have your favourite butcher, you know which shop normally stocks the freshest herbs, your fishmonger knows you well enough to put aside a salmon of particular size every couple of weeks -- bam!, you're in a new place and you have to start all over again. So here we are, starting all over again.

So, what does that mean? Well, that means I have two challenges for this week. Herbs (which, I fear, will be an ongoing one for a few months) and bread improver. And I'll tell you a bit more about the sunny state of Johor soon. Have a good week.

What has happened to the fine art of letter writing? I've been searching high and low for some pretty, high-quality writing paper with envelopes. My search is proving futile.

I don't want note cards. I don't want an personalization. I don't want plain white. I don't want cheap see-through envelopes. I do want to purchase in a store so I can see and touch the paper before buying.

I'm all for e-mail and text messaging. I use them very regularly. I just think it's sad to see them completely replacing something so lovely.

I've got a set of 3 nesting cubes that we picked up at bed bath a while ago, and a almost full gallon of Peaceful Night by behr paint. the cubes are black now but need a fresh coat of paint. the paint is left over from when we repainted our house. I painted the ceiling to make the shower curtain. I want to paint a the cubes in the blue and then take some other paint and paint design on them. My question for y'all is what if anything should I paint on them?
