Has anyone tried the Master Cleanse Detox diet?

Apparently Beyonce did this to get ready for Dreamgirls..I know a friend of mine who did this but I'm kinda skeptical..I have tried the South Beach Diet & would rather do that then this..Have you tried it? Know anyone that has? Any suggestions/comments?

The Diet
Although the recipe varies from source to source the ingredients are generally the same. The Master Cleanse involves eating no solid food. Instead, you drink a mixture of:

2tbsp lemon juice
2tbsp maple syrup
a small amount (eg, 1/10th teaspoon) of Cayenne pepper or other suitable concentrate of the fruit of a Capsicum genus plant with a high position on the Scoville Scale.
1 cup water (or to taste)
This mix can be taken cold, as a cordial, or hot, as a tea. A reasonable nutritive summary of these ingredients is that they provide a selection of essential vitamins and minerals, and some sugars - avoiding the ketosis experienced on the Atkins diet or from pure water fasting. The Cayenne is used primarily for its medicinal effect of promoting metabolic activity.

As solid food is not eaten it is necessary to help the digestive system eliminate material and avoid constipation. This is achieved in two ways: laxative tea is taken every night, and in the morning, a large volume of lukewarm brackish water serves as a top-down enema. The salt in the water (roughly 2 rounded teaspoons to a litre/quart of water) is salt-balanced compared to the blood; ie, the salt level sufficient that the water is not easily absorbed by the intestines, yet not salty enough to make one gag as it is drunk or suffer from excess salt symptoms. This passes through the digestive system extremely quickly - 30-60 minutes.

The diet is for a recommended minimum of ten days, although it is not uncommon for people to stay on the cleanse for longer periods of time.

Fasting for such long periods requires careful breaking, as intestinal cultures need to re-develop and mucus linings re-build. This usually involves drinking "full strength" juices for a day or two, while slowly adding in soups, then fruit, vegetables and nuts before resuming a regular diet. This fast break is an ideal time to add probiotics to re-establish a healthy intestinal culture. [2][3]

The Master Cleanse is said by Stanley Burroughs and later authors to eliminate toxins and congestion that have built up in the body.[2] It is a fast, not a diet - it is not a complete source of macro-nutrients. It should instead be considered as a safer form of fasting than water fasting.

Supporters of the Master Cleanse have credited it with helping them lose weight, increase energy, and even alleviate some chronic diseases.[3]

My sister tried this diet but like Beyonce, she too gained all the weight back when she began to eat normally.

I'm not a fan of just fluid cleanses. As DesignRchic pointed out because you're basically starving your body you lower your metabolism so once you start eating again you put the weight back on and then some.
I think a better route to go would be to incorporate fruits, veggies and some nuts/seeds every couple of hours during the day. You'd still be detoxifying but not shocking your metabolism into shut down mode.

I'd recommend South Beach only because I've tried that, and it's helped me, plus you eat Smiling Detox diets are tempting because you do lose weight, but it's not worth the harm that it can do to your body.
Good luck and best wishes whatever you decide to do. Smiling

This shouldn't be considered a real "diet" and I'm surprised at how many people consider it that. Yes you do lose weight, but not only is half of it water weight, you can not maintain that level of deprevation. I did this cleanse recently, for the detoxifying reasons because it was recommended to me by many people. I think it was great, I was surprised I could do it and I felt great afterwards. But it is NOT a weight-loss technique! You will not keep this weight off! I recommend it as a way of feeling healthier (although everyone is different, I'm not a doctor so I'm not telling you what to do with your body).

This is NOT a diet. It's some hippy detoxing cleanse written in the 70's that claims to give you all the nutrition you need to survive, but will surely deprive you of the nutrients you need to function.

My boyfriend tried this and it sure did "clean" him out (lots of time in the bathroom), but he only lasted 8 days because he was starving and lethargic by that time and couldn't keep up with his normal workout routine. He lost all of the muscle he had worked so hard for months and months to build in a mere week. His body was basically eating his muscle to stay alive. His digestive health has improved since doing the cleanse though, and I do think colon cleansing is very important. For a natural colon cleanse system that allow you to EAT check out www.drnatura.com.

I would recommend good old fashioned diet and exercise. You'd be amazed at what a little weight training and cardio can do for you and your metabolism. I've done South Beach and that's a great, nutritionally sound program. Cut out refined carbs and lower your sugar intake and also give 'You on a Diet' a read. It unravels the body's mysteries and how it processes food and responds to exercise.

    Best of luck to you!

I did this 2 years ago - It's not a diet. It's a cleanse. I did it for the 10 days and I thought it was very successful. I felt much better afterwards and was pretty good about staying away from crappy food for at least 2 months. It is very intense and I recommend doing a TON of research on it prior - You can get the book at most natural food stores - it is very informative. I lost about 9 pounds on it, but then gained back about 4.

It's actually really unhealthy for your body in general. I wish I still had the link for a doctor who goes step by step explaining what that "cleanse" actually does to your body.

My Husband & I have been doing THE MASTER CLEANSE ea. year for 7 yrs, and it has been a success ea. time. Infact, my husband no longer have high blood pressure after a medical Dr. told him he would have to take pills the rest of his life (no pills in 7 yrs). The MASTER CLEANSE is not a diet, it is suppose to cleanse your liver, kidneys, cell, bloodstream, etc.. If not done properly it can harm the body. The min. days for this CLEANSE is 10 days, the max. days is 40 days. The max 40 days is recommended only for major problems like cancer. Of course, you will lose waste/weight, but you only gain back what you need. After about 4 days on the cleanse you get a burst of energy, you can work out while on the cleanse. You never get hungry starting from day 1, you only want food if you see it, but if you just stop and ask yourself, "Am I hungry?" you will see that you are not. After the cleanse your bad eating habits are gone. The ingredients above are incorrect; you must use organic lemon juice from fresh squeezed lemons, pure organic maple syrup, purified/distilled water & cayenne pepper. You have to use a Organic Laxative Tea & real Sea Salt. Medical Doctors will tell you anything, they only know what they have been taught. They say americans can't have parasites. Anyway, If you are considering this CLEANSE which I recommend, first BUY THE BOOK $6.99 "THE MASTER CLEANSE" by Stanley Burrough. You won't be disappointed!!!
