The most desirable hair for extensions comes from India; with 25% coming from a Hindu temple where women shave their heads in sacrifice for their religious beliefs. The temple makes 18 million dollars a year selling the hair.

That's how it seems to me too, Martini! Of course, if there's a negative side to this (women are being forced, the money's not going where it's supposed to, etc.), I'd like to hear about it so I can be more informed.

Found this article: It would seem that they are fulfilling a religious obligation when they do this. I am ok with this, if that is the case. Doesn't sound like anyone is being forced to do this, and I am assuming that the proceeds go for the temple maintenance and to promote the programs the temple supports.

Well, Jinx, the article says it takes millions of dollars to run the temple complex every year, some of that money goes for that. I was curious after I saw you comment and asked a coworker who is Indian about this. She said that it is really GOOD that this is going on, in her view! She said that many social services that we take for granted here are not provided by the government there. Most of those services are provided by the temples and religious organizations - so really, this money most likely is going to support those who need help in the community. I guess if she is from there and thinks it is a good thing, I don't have a problem with it...

I had extensions a couple of years ago (very damaging!) and they were from India. I had asked. I had no idea they made that much on them! I thought my hair stylist was banking, but they are the ones who have it going on! Crazy. I sincerely hope the profits go toward only worthy causes and never greed.
