Members of one of the world’s last uncontacted tribes have been spotted and photographed from the air near the Brazil-Peru border. The photos were taken during several flights over one of the remotest parts of the Amazon rainforest in Brazil’s Acre state.

‘We did the overflight to show their houses, to show they are there, to show they exist,’ said uncontacted tribes expert José Carlos dos Reis Meirelles Júnior. Meirelles works for FUNAI, the Brazilian government’s Indian affairs department. ‘This is very important because there are some who doubt their existence.’

Meirelles says that the group’s numbers are increasing. But other uncontacted groups in the region, whose homes have been photographed from the air, are in severe danger from illegal logging in Peru. Logging is driving uncontacted tribes over the border and could lead to conflict with the estimated five hundred uncontacted Indians already living on the Brazilian side.

‘What is happening in this region [of Peru] is a monumental crime against the natural world, the tribes, the fauna and is further testimony to the complete irrationality with which we, the ‘civilised’ ones, treat the world,’ said Meirelles.

There are more than one hundred uncontacted tribes worldwide, with more than half living in either Brazil or Peru. All are in grave danger of being forced off their land, killed and decimated by new diseases. Survival has launched an urgent campaign to get their land protected, and a unique film narrated by actress Julie Christie.

Survival’s director Stephen Corry said today, ‘These pictures are further evidence that uncontacted tribes really do exist. The world needs to wake up to this, and ensure that their territory is protected in accordance with international law. Otherwise, they will soon be made extinct.’

i find this story and the pictures amazing. seeing them in their war paint and trying to take down the plane with bows and arrows is fascinating. we have so much to learn from people who live this way and it breaks my heart to know that their lives are being disrupted because of what we are doing to the rain forest. Sad

On one side, I think that it would be amazing to preserve their ancient customs for the anthropological value, but on the other, I also realize that they deserve to improve their lifestyle. In any way, it truly sucks that we are sacrifying their habitat and destroying the rainforest, all in one strike.

I hate to be the one who is the NON-believer.

Point # 1 , Looking at the photos, it appears that one of the men is wearing sneakers (tennis shoes) while he is pointing his arrows toward the sky.

Point # 2, do people honestly believe that this tribe of uncontacted Amazon indians, had time to put war paint on and then confront the airplane? It is absurd to believe that.

Point # 3, there appears to be a black object in each photo, is it bigfoot? Is is head to toe war paint that was thrown together upon seeing the low flying air craft?

Something about this story and the photos makes me want to investigate further. I do believe that there are bands of indians living in the Amazon jungle or in jungles all over the world. However, society is curious by nature and guided by greed, I find it way to hard to believe that someone saw these indians and looked at the window, snapped a photo and said "cool".

    hmmm

There are actually so many unexplored tribes of natives all over the Amazon that many - who have sporadically been contacted by reasearchers or missionaries, are still living the same way they did centuries ago.
However, it is true that more research needs to be done. We all remember the Tasadays of Mindanao.
Hopefully we will have more in-depth information soon.

Really fascinating to see this. It's sad I think to really disrupt their way of life. They don't know any differently and probably manage decently to survive- until, as you stated Shi, we start destroying the rain forests that they have around them. Amazing story though- I don't think many of us stop and think of what still remains undiscovered and untainted around the world.

i appreciate your points threesecondfall but i will go on to add we don't know how long the plane/copter had been circling that spot. this could have been going on for some time. they could have circled and waited for a glimpse of the inhabitants who could have been hiding from this strange thing. then after all the time hearing the noise they could have had enough and decided to try to get rid of it. honestly we just don't know. true or not it is has sparked some amazing dialogue.
